How to draw...

Build one curling wave around a clear spiral axis, keep three long flow bands attached to that first silhouette, then break the crest and base into chunky foam before adding a limited ocean palette. The useful challenge is making a large fluid shape feel forceful and readable while the visible marker streaks keep the finish attainable by hand.

Felt-tip marker mode

Let's draw a comic ocean wave

Treat this as one playful practice round: sketch the idea loosely, simplify the shapes, then commit with confident marker outlines and bright fills.

  1. 01
Map the curl stage for how to draw a comic ocean wave

    Map the curl

Place one pale spiral-C curl guide, a low wedge base, a small foam footprint, and exactly three reserved spray-droplet positions in one fixed square crop.

Marker tip: Ghost the spiral twice before touching down, then check that the base feels wide enough to support the tall crest. Mark all three droplet positions now so the splash cannot drift later.

  2. 02
Shape the wave stage for how to draw a comic ocean wave

    Shape the wave

Connect the guides into one broad wave body with a pointed crest curling left and a low base stretching right, while preserving the small foam footprint.

Marker tip: Rotate the page for the long outer curve and pull it in one confident pass. Keep the open spiral large enough that it will still read after the outline becomes thick.

  3. 03
Pull three flow bands stage for how to draw a comic ocean wave

    Pull three flow bands

Add exactly three curved tapering flow bands inside the established wave, all following the same spiral toward the crest.

Marker tip: Start each band near the curl and let it widen toward the base. Compare the paper gaps between bands so none collapses into a thin accidental stripe.

  4. 04
Break up the foam stage for how to draw a comic ocean wave

    Break up the foam

Build chunky foam scallops along the existing crest and base, then turn the three reserved spray marks into exactly three separate droplets.

Marker tip: Vary the scallop sizes instead of stamping identical bumps. Count three droplets before moving on and keep clear paper around each one.

  5. 05
Ink and color the surge stage for how to draw a comic ocean wave

    Ink and color the surge

Thicken every established contour with imperfect black felt-tip, then fill the existing wave with deep navy and muted sea green while preserving cream foam and paper gaps.

Marker tip: Pull marker strokes along each curve and let one band dry before coloring the next. The visible streaks help show the motion, so do not scrub them into a seamless digital-looking fill.

    Finish the comic wave

Strengthen the established outlines and clarify the three flow bands, foam scallops, three droplets, limited ocean fills, and intentional dry-marker highlights.

Marker tip: Count three bands and three droplets, then stop while the marker texture still shows. A face, sun, boat, surfboard, extra splash, sticker edge, or badge frame would make a different lesson.
